While the garage door seems like a simple object that only requires a push of a button, the mechanism is quite different. It consists of many moving parts integral to its function. One of the essential components is the springs. Torsion springs are two garage door spring types, and here's everything worth knowing about them.
What's the purpose of torsion springs?
Contrary to popular belief, the garage door's motor (operator) doesn't do the most work when lowering or raising the door. The springs carry the heaviest load always.
More specifically, torsion springs counterbalance the door's weight and allow the motor to lower or raise it with relative ease. For instance, if the door weighs 300 pounds, the torsion springs would apply a force of 300 pounds to enable you to open or close the door. Considering the enormous force that they need to exert, these springs can be under tremendous pressure.
If they are broken, the entire weight of lifting the garage door will fall on the motor. Unfortunately, that's not going to happen, and you'll have to replace the springs.
Most garage doors have these springs on their upper left and right corners. However, depending on the door's design and manufacturer, there could be just a single torsion spring at the top center of the garage door.
How to maintain torsion springs
With proper maintenance, garage door torsion springs can last more than ten years. Here's how to lower the wear and tear:
Apply lubricant to the springs to prevent squeaking
To find the ideal lubricant for the springs, consult the garage door manufacturer. Like with any job, don't forget to take some protective measures while working around torsions springs. Watch your fingers so that they don't get pinched, and always wear gloves.
Be on the lookout for serious warning signs
If the door squeaks loudly despite proper lubrication, there may be a severe problem. Reach out to a professional garage door company if the following developments occur:
Clanging noises or squeaking when opening or closing the door
Opening and closing the door isn't smooth
An uneven door (e.g., an uneven area between the door and the ground)
Examine and clean the door regularly
Proper care for the door can significantly reduce the pressure on the springs. Inspect each element to make sure everything functions normally. Also, clean the exterior of the door to prevent corrosion and rust.
Replace both springs
If there's a problem with the torsion springs, they will need to be replaced most of the time. Always change out both torsion springs at the same time since they have the same life span. If one breaks, the other is bound to fail soon, which is why it's better, and ultimately cheaper, to replace both at once.
