SAFETY ADVICE FOR A NEW GARAGE OWNER
Your new garage is more than just a place to park your car and store additional items. It’s another entryway and exit to the inside of your home. Keeping your garage secure and your loved ones safe can be achieved by following some of the tips below.
Inspect your garage routinely
Routine inspection on your garage door, springs, and cables decreases the chance of an accident and helps you know if you need any repairs or a garage system replacement. Each month do a quick monthly inspection making sure there aren’t any signs of wear and tear.
Consider testing your garage door opener to make sure the reversing mechanism is working correctly. You can do this by using a paper towel roll or a 2 x 4 board and placing it the path of the door. Upon contact, the garage door should reverse. If this fails to happen, contact a professional garage door company to see if you need a repair or replacement. Consider installing a new opener, if you know if it hasn’t been replaced in more than 15 years.
Children and your garage
Garages can be a great place for family activity and home storage, so taking necessary simple repercussions can limit the chance of injury. To ensure their utmost safety, do not let children play with the garage door itself. Additionally, the garage remote control and garage control button should be out of reach for small children. Warn children of the dangers of putting fingers between the door sections and consider a panel door that doesn’t pinch if it’s an area you plan to spend time with your little ones.
Never leave small children unattended in the garage, especially if there are cabinets or storage racks that could tip. Always secure cabinets and storage safely to a wall, as described by the manufacturer. Keep any hazardous items stored securely up high and out of your child’s reach.
Stay safe even while away
If you plan to be away for a few days or more, unplug the garage door opener from its power source. This stops the potential of someone gaining access to your garage while you’re on vacation. Never leave garage door remotes in an unlocked car. Use a safety feature like the vacation lock console; it’s a security switch that makes your garage door remote unusable for the time you’re away. When leaving for that day or longer, do not leave the garage door partially open. An open door increases the risk of unwanted intruders entering your home, and can cause mechanical issues should something get in the way.
Many new homeowners will also install security cameras outside of their homes. Today there are many inexpensive and useful options that you can monitor from your smartphone, like the Google Nest Cam IQ shown here.
Keeping your home garage secure is crucial to being comfortable in your new house. We hope these simple garage safety tips keep you and your family safe, and able to enjoy your new space.
