Garage Door Adversities
Garage doors are a marvel of technology. It makes what they do look effortless. After all, opening and closing couldn't be all that hard, could it? The thing is, garage doors do their job efficiently because they are made up of complex machinery. Couple this with people's tendency to get into all kinds of accidents, and you end up with a dangerous combination.
Here, we present some of the most common adversities involving your garage door.
Backing onto the garage door
This happens more often than anyone would realize. In fact, as per the National Electronic Injury System or NEISS, it's the most common accident that involves garage door owners. Just because you pushed a button isn't a guarantee that a garage door will open. It's always a good idea to check the rearview mirror.
Your garage door closes on you too quickly
This is another relatively common mishap. Your door opens fine, but halfway through, it ends up crashing down on your car. This can be frustrating, especially because you are stuck with an unusable vehicle and an open garage. Garage door tension springs are called that because they are under a lot of strain, which keeps that garage door stuck. A sudden release could cause injuries.
The garage door comes off the tracks
There are many causes for this, either a buildup of dirt or objects that get jammed on the rollers, causing them to misalign. Although a very annoying problem, as long as the doors are closed, it shouldn't be too dangerous. Unless, of course, you decide to tinker with it on your own. If you don't know what you're doing, you could lose a finger or worse.
The garage door doesn't close properly
Usually caused by dirty sensors, these can be quickly addressed by checking to see if your sensors are being blocked by something. If so, removing the offending item should fix this problem. If you don't see anything wrong with it, the close limit switch which controls it may be faulty. Trying to fix this on your own is a bad idea. If you can't see what's wrong, it needs a technician.
The garage door won't open at all
This could be anything from dead batteries to a broken motor. Check your remote. If that doesn't help, call a technician.
Accidents happen
More often than not, garage door accidents will involve human error. That's fine; accidents happen. But trying to fix them on your own will rarely help. Garage doors aren't a do-it-yourself kind of deal. Unless you have an idea of what to do, this could cause more harm than good. Call in the professionals, and save yourselves from any additional headaches.
